“Big Boulder Drops on Topanga Blvd.”
A huge boulder weighing an estimated several hundred tons, loosened by storm water, crashed down on Topanga Boulevard from a height of 40 feet shortly after 8 o'clock Monday evening, just past the sharp turn east of the Shopping Center on the Fred Solomon property, about opposite Ken’s Pleasant Inn, blocking the entire northbound lane. A State Highway maintenance crew worked most of the night to clear the obstruction by breaking off chunks of the boulder to reduce the weight enough for tractors to shunt it off the traffic lanes to the inside of the curve.
SIZE OF BOULDER may be judged by Horst Spiess who drove his pickup truck alongside, with a group of his teen age friends including Jim Downing, Dave and Kent Niles and Jack Carroll. White line in foreground marks edge of pavement.
