“Visitors at Nike Base Ceremony”
Guests at the ceremony were given an explanation of the missile system’s operation and shown through the integrated Fire Control area on Saddle Peak. Both Hercules and Ajax missiles were on display at the launching area.
Visitors also were shown a drill by four German shepherd dogs which have been trained to guard the base. Each will respond only to its handler and will attack any other human being it can reach.
The Malibu Nike site on Rambla Pacifico is the fifth Nike site in this area to be armed with the new Hercules missile.
The Hercules has both atomic and high-explosive capabilities.
